All set to launch her studio in Mumbai next week, mens-wear designer, Sarah Sheikh, talks collars, ties and jackets
Sarah Sheikh, the London College of Fashion alumnus, has worked as a stylist for commercials like Dove, Chevrolet Beat, Tata Docomo and Ponds. This was followed by a brief stint as a fashion intern at GQ magazine, where the 23-year-old realized her calling was menswear. Thus the bespoke label, SS Homme, was launched in 2010, with a workforce of 11. Sheikh is now opening her own design studio in Mumbai on May 1, and says her customers usually range from 25 to 55 year-olds, most being corporates. “Indian men work so hard and they deserve to wear the best,” says the young designer, who retails suits, tuxedos, jackets, trousers (jodhpuris and chinos), traditional sherwanis and bandhgala suits. With her penchant for European silhouettes and clean aesthetics with “no bling”. Sheikh certainly knows what works at the office and that international conference. More from her:
Ties: Slim ties go well checkered pants as well as plain ones. I recommend knit ties and bow ties. Go for colours like red, maroon, emerald, and turquoise. These colours will light up your suit and it’s not the boring black or blue.
Jacket : Try a one-button suit that is slim cut with a single vent. Play around with subtle detailing on lapel and buttons. A bandhgala jacket can easily go from day to evening if paired with the right trousers.
Fabric: Lightweight fabrics are a must .I would recommend linen in bright colours. Go for beige, blue and turquoise. Seersucker suits and jackets in bright shades are perfect for spring-summer.
Collars: This year, I’m giving mandarin collars a shot. Also, go for button-down collars for the evening and office shirts.
Cuts: Be modern yet classic. The slim fit is good as long as it doesn’t make you uncomfortable. Shorter jackets are in trend as well. Dress according to your body type, irrespective of trends.
Silhouette: I would suggest the European silhouette. You can opt for slim fits and double breasted suit. Have fun with pocket squares in vibrant colours.s:09930584392
Sheikh’s suits are priced from Rs. 25,000 on wards, jackets, Rs.14,000 onwards, shorts at Rs. 3,500 onwards, trousers at Rs.6,000 onwards and sherwanis and bandhgala suits, from Rs.28,000 onwards. Detai
