The Alpha Male Can Drop By

Excerpt from the Mid-day July 17, 2012

Keeping in mind the metrosexual man, who doesn't like to compromise on the finesse and style of his wardrobe, new menswear store SS Homme offers cuts and fabrics that will give every outfit a carefully crafted look

Young designer Sarah Sheikh, who graduated from the London College of Fashion, had a natural inclination towards menswear. While designing for her male friends, brothers and her father, Sarah found that her heart lies in male fashion and she decided to start a brand that provided completely customised clothing, keeping in mind the diversity of men in India. Her business partner Sandeep Gonsalves fuelled this passion and SS Homme came into existence.

The new clothing brand, offers complete bespoke services, solely for menswear. Under the brand, both Sarah and Sandeep make sure that they deliver custom-made formal wear, to suit each customer’s preference and personality with emphasis given on the cut, fabric and fine tailoring.
“SS Homme believes in keeping it simple and sophisticated. Impeccable tailoring speaks volumes of a man’s wardrobe and that’s what we strive to achieve. It’s a personalised approach towards creating an up-to-date yet classy business and evening attire, giving the customers quality and finesse at an affordable price,” says Sheikh.
Supporting Sarah in her thought, Gonsalves echoes, “We are not targetting any specific target audience, but the kind of people that come to us are men who know exactly what they like. In terms of our design aesthetics, we don’t offer mundane regular suits. Our clothes speak for themselves, from tuxedos to bandhgalas and a lot more.”
As far as their USP is concerned, Gonsalves makes it clear that they are willing to do anything for a client’s satisfaction. “Customisation is our USP. We will do anything for our clients. If the client wants a suit with a specific button detailing or a material of his choice, we are willing to customise as per his preferences,” he stresses.
However, you can’t avail the services at a whim. You will need to make an appointment to visit the store; Gonsalves has a reason behind that: “We want to give personal attention to all our clients so that we can understand their needs. We want to be present whenever they come in. So, it’s always better that we are in the know.”

Customisation Is The Way Forward This Party Season

An excerpt from the Hindustan Times
Bhairavi Jhaveri
Mumbai, December 05, 2012

Even the party scene is competitive these days. Nobody wants to wear something everybody else has, so they are ready to pay a premium for owning an outfit or accessory made especially for them. The trend of bespoke fashion comes when people are already spending generously on how they look. But new bespoke labels in the city are dispelling myths associated with words like ‘customised’ and ‘bespoke’ —  such as ‘expensive’ and ‘out of reach’. They are making it more accessible by pricing competitively and giving their labels a relaxed, youthful touch.

As the party season heats up, here are five new bespoke labels you can turn to for that absolutely perfect look.

Bespoke Menswear by SS Homme
By: Sarah Sheikh, 24, and Sandeep Gonsalves, 26

What they do: SS Homme customises shirts, tuxedos, waistcoats, bow ties and ties, sherwanis and Nehru jackets. Sarah, a graduate from London School of Fashion, has a fashion ethic that is subtle, focusing on clean detailing, fit, fabric and finishing. “I don’t do bling, embroidery or stonework for Indian wear,” she says. “My look is classic, with subtle details such as piping, pocket and collar styles, velvet borders or pleating techniques.”

How it works: After booking an appointment with the duo, you drop in at their Khar studio to check out their sample rack. Pick a fabric using fabric books sourced from brands like Scabal, Loro Piana and J. Hampstead, and be measured from head to toe. Sarah will advise on the silhouette and start detailing the garment based on your personality, body frame and the occasion. An artwork is created on Photoshop, using a scanned version of the chosen fabric to help you visualise the
outfit. It takes around 10 working days for the garment to be ready, and includes two trial fittings.

Beau Brummell - The Inventor of 'Dandyism'

Name: George Bryan Brummell famously known as ‘Beau Brummell’,

Born: June 7, 1778, London

Died: March 30, 1840

Occupation: English gentleman. Deemed the leader of fashion at the beginning of the 19th
century.

Legacy: Brummell established a style of dressing for men who wished to move away from the overly
ornate fashions and let them adopt a more understated but perfectly fitted, bespoke clothing that
replaced the knee breaches and stockings with dark coats, full-length trousers, immaculate shirt
linen and an elaborately knotted cravat. He is known to be the pioneer of the modern men's suit,
worn with a tie.

He claimed that it took him 5 hours to dress and he recommended that one should polish ones
boots with champagne. His style of dressing is popularly called ‘Dandyism’.

Brummell was born in a middle class family but was educated in Eton where he first began his
new style by not only modernizing his white stock or cravat (a symbol of the Eton boys,) but
adding a gold buckle to it. He then proceeded to Oxford where he by example made stockings
and cravats, a thing of the past.

His style and personality earned him favor with the prince himself. Aware of his finances he
avoided certain extravagances of a gentleman. However he refused to economize on his dress.
When asked how much it would cost to keep a single man in clothes, he was supposed to have
replied: "Why, with tolerable economy, I think it might be done with £800. (The wages of
craftsmen in the 19th century was a pound a week).

Brummell put into practice, perhaps instinctively, the principles of harmony of shape and
contrast of colors, with such pleasing results that men of superior rank sought his professional
opinion on their dress.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2006 Beau Brummell Inspired Look
Beau Brummell is an example of how a 19th century British man with no title, fortune or
illustrious family connections could climb up in society through education, wit, the right friends
and influential timeless style.
