Believe in your Flyness..Conquer your Shyness – Kanye West

         While we would never quote Kanye for any of his ludicrous statements, this one actually has some truth to it. For instance, every now and then you find the male version of Ugly Betty at your workplace. The typical, smart, shy, fashion challenged, be-speckled nerd who’s true potential is hidden behind his baggy clothes and oversized spectacles.

If you’re him, then transforming yourself just got way easier. All you need is the will, Kanye West’ style mantra and some of the moolah you’ve been saving up on by pulling all those late nighters.

First things first

Forego the 5 hour gaming session on the weekend and go to the barbers. Having a sharp haircut and shaving away those whiskers will make a girl look twice.

Eye Contact

Though geek glasses are now quite chic, it helps if your colleagues and friends can look into your eyes while talking to you. Invest in clear good quality contact lenses.

Now straight to the wardrobe

Old, frayed, baggy or greyed..nay nay and nay!

Lose them all.

Sleek slim fit trousers in navy, grey, black and brown are wardrobe essentials. Pair them with shirts of fine cotton that fit you well and let your skin breathe. Polyester and Indian men have always had a poor relationship.

Blazers – no wardrobe is complete without the essential jacket  

  1.    The work jacket- choose a jacket with a medium sized lapel, either peak or notch, depending on your preference. Make sure it fits well. Bespoke Jackets are custom made to flatter your body regardless of your shape so it is worth investing in them.

The Wedding Dilemma

Every year the wedding season strikes us hard and fast, leaving us floundering and wondering, “Is it that time of year again? Do I have anything to wear?  And yet another one bites the dust!”

Are you low on ideas on where to get your next suit and unsatisfied with the choice of tailored clothing out there?

Fear not, SS Homme has the answer to all your sartorial dilemmas for this wedding season.

Whether you are looking for the perfect Bespoke suit for you cousin’s engagement or your best friend’s destination wedding these simple rules still apply.

While you wish to look dapper in your new suit you don’t want to out shine the groom. So here’s how to keep it simple, yet stylish.

  1.    Its does matter if its Black or White

Michael Jackson may have been singing about embracing your skin colour but when it comes to your styling mantra don’t embrace his philosophy.  The Black suit is a dime a dozen and you do not want to be confused with a waiter when a slightly tipsy uncle hails one from the bar.

Solid white suits are a no no.

  2.    Fifty Shades of Grey

While women all over the world have been gaga over this series of books, the title does have a point. There are various shades of grey that would make you look unique yet stylish. TIP- chose a darker grey with a smaller checkered pattern or let the suit shine just a tad bit.

  3.    Colours
     If you already have too many greys in your wardrobe and you are ready to experiment with colour try a deep burgundy, cobalt blue or a chocolate brown suit.

  4.    Size Matters

A month away from the wedding and you are not feeling as fit as you used to be, all those late working hours and take outs are beginning to show on your body. Don’t get carried away and get a tight suit thinking that surely if you went to the gym early every morning you would lose a few pounds. Instead dress for your size. You will look and feel comfortable and you wont have to dread your jacket button popping mid-meal while you’re chatting with that cute bride’s friend. Bespoke suits are your best bet for the perfect fit.

  5.    Shirting’s the Issue

Make sure your shirt is well fitted. You can choose light pastel colours for day functions or darker hues for the night. However, make sure the colours of your suit and shirt are not in stark contrast to one another.

  6.    Spice it up

Add that silk pocket square you’ve been unsure about or a quirky bow tie for a Youngsters event.

There’s a woman behind every successful man and according to new designer Sarah Shaikh, there’s one behind every well-dressed man as well! Rhea Dhanbhoora gets talking to the menswear designer to find out more

While other girls were dressing up Barbie, Sarah Sheikh was busy putting together a wardrobe for Ken! Sarah, is the woman behind SS Homme, a menswear brand and the vivacious 23-year-old has come a long way since her days at London College of Fashion. We find out more about her label and what it’s like dressing up men!

How did you enter the fashion world? 
I was interning at GQ India and I fell in love with menswear looking at the likes of Prada and Gucci. I styled for commercials for a while but decided to take the plunge and start SS Homme. 

What is SS Homme all about? Do you have any plans of going retail? 
SS Homme is a bespoke menswear brand. I sit with clients and design clothes according to their preference, after which it takes 10 working days till a trial or delivery, depending on the client’s needs. I want to branch out into footwear and accessories but I don’t want to compromise on the personal touch, so no retail. 

How come you’ve never wanted to design women’s clothing? 
I’ve always been interested in designing and what’s more, I think it’s time women got involved. I think the chances of me designing for women were always slim. 

Do you think men in India are becoming more fashion conscious? 
Earlier, formal wear was boring with mostly blacks and greys. Now, the younger generation of corporate professionals is open to being experimental. Small details make a big difference and the younger lot of Indian men are beginning to see this.

Who inspires you?
I absolutely love Yohji Yamamoto. His designs are different but I take inspiration from his creativity. As for my own style, I love Saville Row, Georgio Armani and Tom Ford. European and English cuts are my favourites. 

Are men unwilling to take suggestions from you because you’re a woman? 
Oh yes! Men who come in with their wives or girlfriends are much more willing to listen to my suggestions. But, then there is the slightly older crowd who come in alone and all they want is for me to design exactly what they have in mind and not question their style. I have found that older men are rigid in their style and are also less willing to let a woman give them any tips. 

Do you think men need a woman’s opinion when it comes to style?
Yes, I do. Men are so busy with work that they don’t have the time to be fashion conscious. Women have great taste and let’s face it; we’re really good at being stylish. 

What are the current trends in menswear?
You shouldn’t blindly follow trends, switch it around to suit your own personality and body type. Textures, weaves and a dash of colour can make a difference. Men should look dapper. I think bandhgala’s are really trendy right now. 

What’s the biggest mistake men make when it comes to fashion? 
The most common mistake is wearing ill-fitted clothes. Extremely loose clothes do not make you look cool and too-tight clothes don’t make you look tough. Big hips can look ridiculous in skinny jeans, so dress according to your body type. And wear the right shoes. You can’t wear moccasins with a suit or brogues with chinos. 

How would you dress your perfect man?
I love formal wear and my favourite colour is navy — so it would be a classic two button navy suit. I’d love him to be wearing a well fitting salmon pink shirt, a black slim tie with a tie pin and rich burgundy shoes paired with a burgundy leather belt. I like my man to look suave in a suit.

Men must have 
“All men should have a well-fitted white shirt, a great pair of dark, well fitted denims and a sports blazer, preferably in a shade of grey. I also think it’s really important for a man to have a classic two button suit, a dinner jacket with a contrast lapel and coloured socks. Men should realise that they can’t wear white socks with everything, it’s boring! And, every man should follow a mantra — match your belt with your shoes, it’s more important than you think,” says Sarah

Customisation Is The Way Forward This Party Season

Even the party scene is competitive these days. Nobody wants to wear something everybody else has, so they are ready to pay a premium for owning an outfit or accessory made especially for them. The trend of bespoke fashion comes when people are already spending generously on how they look. But new bespoke labels in the city are dispelling myths associated with words like ‘customised’ and ‘bespoke’ —  such as ‘expensive’ and ‘out of reach’. They are making it more accessible by pricing competitively and giving their labels a relaxed, youthful touch.

As the party season heats up, here are five new bespoke labels you can turn to for that absolutely perfect look.

Bespoke Menswear by SS Homme

What they do: SS Homme customises shirts, tuxedos, waistcoats, bow ties and ties, sherwanis and Nehru jackets. Sarah, a graduate from London School of Fashion, has a fashion ethic that is subtle, focusing on clean detailing, fit, fabric and finishing. “I don’t do bling, embroidery or stonework for Indian wear,” she says. “My look is classic, with subtle details such as piping, pocket and collar styles, velvet borders or pleating techniques.” 

How it works: After booking an appointment with the duo, you drop in at their Khar studio to check out their sample rack. Pick a fabric using fabric books sourced from brands like Scabal, Loro Piana and J. Hampstead, and be measured from head to toe. Sarah will advise on the silhouette and start detailing the garment based on your personality, body frame and the occasion. An artwork is created on Photoshop, using a scanned version of the chosen fabric to help you visualise the 
outfit. It takes around 10 working days for the garment to be ready, and includes two trial fittings.
